January 26th, 2010
A recent decision by the American supreme court has over ruled a law stopping corporations from making financial contributions to political campaigns. This ruling was passed based on the fact that it was unconstitutional to suppress the free speech of corporations and special interest groups. The protection of this basic HUMAN right has now been applied to non humans and signifies a shift of priorities. A fundamental part of democracy is that every individual has an equal say in who is elected. By giving corporations this power to influence the people of the country we have further perverted the democratic ideal in order for profit. Corporations have a legal obligation to maximize profits to their share holders and will do malevolent things in order to achieve this. By giving these groups the power to promote candidates in congruence with their agenda we have further minimized the say of the PEOPLE and we will be marginalized as voters because the potential contribution of a vote is insignificant in comparison to multi-million dollar contributions. I don’t live in the United States, but this decision will have consequences that spread far outside of their borders. We have to stop the transformation of our Democracy (already in the loosest sense of the word) into a Plutonomy. You think Obama’s campaign was commercial? It will be nothing in comparison of what’s to come.
I’m confident that many uneducated individuals won’t even realize that when they are standing in line on election day they are standing behind Tony the Tiger and the Geico Lizard…

PRE EARTHQUAKE
“Brit xox… Bar tonight ladies!! (L) Haiti in my heart”
In my opinion this msn name more or less summarizes the campaign for relief for Haiti since their catastrophe. Be it through “save Haiti themed bar nights” and hundreds of TV telethons the world is really coming together to help one of the poorest countries. By no means am I not happy that we are helping out the worst off in our world, but why is it so much more important now? Haitians have been suffering for the extent of their sovereignty and we have shown little to no interest. They have been one the poorest countries in the world for the last century with a serious AIDS epidemic and NOW all of a sudden people care.
I’m amazed by the amount of ignorance to serious world issues until it becomes a movement to jump on. In 2006 80 percent of Haitians lived below the poverty line with 54% living in object poverty. Before the recent catastrophe, giving Haiti money would be criticized as financial redistribution and condemned by a significant portion of the country.
In my opinion, we need to look at this sudden altruism and seriously consider the point when and where we starting caring. This line is far too motivated by causes of the minute and we need to reconsider the point when it becomes a worthy cause to us as a society.
Lets help out the worst off in our world because they are just that, the worst off.
